Anson Thomas is a retired customs officer and former hockey player. During his career, he has represented Bombay and Indian Customs many times. His mission is to rescue women and children from the underbelly of Mumbai’s red-light areas, and he used sports as a way to venture into this. He gave up his service in Customs to serve his calling. Anson has rescued over 800 women and children from the red-light areas of India and rehabilitated many of them; today they are in the mainstream of society. In 2009, he received the CNN and Reliance Industries Real Heroes Award for Women Empowerment; when he accepted the award, he stated that his vision and mission were to turn red-light areas into green-light areas. |
