Drs. Vijay Anand Ismavel and Ann Miriam have been working at the Makunda Christian Leprosy and General Hospital, located in a remote part of Assam, since 1993. This hospital, which was previously closed for 10 years, is now a thriving institution, thanks to the dedication and commitment of Dr. Vijay, Dr. Ann, and their team of committed staff. Originally from Tamil Nadu, they completed their postgraduate studies (Paediatric Surgery and Anesthesiology, respectively) at CMC, Vellore, and have developed a high quality sustainable model of service for the poor called the “Makunda Model” over the past 25 years. This model uses lessons from their many years of struggle to overcome major obstacles and still excel in caring for the poor. Dr. Ann is the Correspondent for Training at Makunda; they started a higher secondary school, a nursing school, as well as a branch hospital in the state of Tripura between 2004 and 2006. Dr. Vijay is also involved in biodiversity documentation (he has the highest number of observations from India on iNaturalist) and writes about mission-related topics. Christian Medical College, Vellore, awarded Vijay and Ann the prestigious Paul Harrison Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2016.
